Startup does not wait on a text message.
On a third shift, the question is narrow. Which food-contact items are still open, who owns them, and which ones were closed before the line is allowed to start.
Plant rounds are harsher than a reservoir walk because the clock is the line. A deficiency on a food-contact surface is not a held item. It is a block. A deficiency on a door sweep might cross the shift if someone owns it and the review time is this morning, not “sometime.”
Larkspur Foods, outside Findlay, Ohio, put the sanitation round in Tidep for that reason. In the first four months, sanitation-related startup holds went from 11 to 2. They will tell you the software did not clean anything. It stopped the argument about whether the record existed.
Inspectors record. The supervisor on the incoming shift closes or holds. An inspector cannot close another person’s item, which matters when the person who found it has gone home. The handoff essay, what the next shift actually needs, is the practice note we wrote after Larkspur’s first winter.
